Quite simply, its ability to take Raman into a whole new world of
sensitivity and thereby open up a world of analytical possibilities.
Raman spectroscopy offers fast, nondestructive, non-invasive analysis
of molecular structure and identity but it lacks sensitivity.
This means it cant be used for trace level analysis.
But SERS increases the normally very weak Raman signals as much as
a million-fold for trace level samples, providing ultra high sensitivity
at picogram levels and less.
SO WHY HASNT SERS CAUGHT ON?
Although the SERS effect has been known for over 30 years it has not
yet been adopted outside specialist research labs because until
now no-one has been able to make substrates that give reproducible

Klarite is designed and manufactured using the same photolithographic
processes used in the semiconductor industry. This makes the substrates
inherently reproducible and means they can be produced in large volumes,

For ease of use, the substrates are available mounted on standard
75x25mm microscope slides, or as unmounted chips.
